Think prime Andy Irons era and the Momentum Generation. The way those long, narrow boards were adapted to the hollow, cupped-out faces showcased some incredible surfing. Around this same time, I also happened to see Creed McTaggart riding what I believe was one of Gunther Rohn’s '90s thrusters at home. The board then sat in my mind for some time until Torren and my son Dash were on Calypte. It was right around the time of Mikala Jones’ sad passing. Like Mikala, the boys were a long way from help if needed. My parental instincts kicked in, and I started to think of all the boards I had seen and heard of where the noses had their points removed for safety, without compromising performance. Probably the most striking design feature of the RL is the nose concave. This is in place to mitigate any catch points that may be created with the blunt nose. The plan shape is full of foam, with it pushed nose to tail and rail to rail. Its overall rocker is relaxed with a late nose acceleration to help with steep drops. The rails are low and boxy for hold but add resistance through turns. As for bottom contours, it's a single concave throughout, with the concave not reaching the tuck of the rail under the midpoint of the board, importantly creating hold and control. Here is some feedback over the past year we have had it in development:

Torren Martyn

I’ve been loving the Remote Location (RL) in heavy, hollow waves and steeper down-the-line walls. I wouldn’t necessarily prefer the RL over, say, the Fiji in bigger waves; however, it certainly holds its own in hollow waves and more top-to-bottom surfing. I feel like someone jumping from a performance or more traditional shortboard outline would find the Remote more approachable as a step-up.

Micah Margison

The Remote is all about speed and drive. It's tailored for long walls to bite in like a thruster but has the speed of a twin. I like that. It also has the narrowness that gives it an amazing pivot, making the board unique compared to quite a lot of boards in this day and age. Think a little more ‘90s in outline—no hip between your feet to create your turning arc. The RL is all about rail.

Dash Jones

I've always found twins a little less forgiving on my backhand—that was until I got on the Remote Location. My first surf on it was a windy left peak. From the first wave, the board changed my whole perception of twin fins for my backhand! The liveliness of the single concave gave me speed, while the refined rail curve drew out my lines, giving me both direction and hold! I can now say the RL is my go-to backside board in any waves with a bit of push!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0436/9222/8774/files/SimonJonesDesigns_6_2_RemoteLocationCreamSurfboard6.webp?v=1769651177
tyler-warren-6-10-big-fish-cobalt-surfboard
Tyler Warren | 6’10” Big Fish Cobalt Surfboard

The Big Fish surfboard from Tyler Warren was inspired by the San Diego fish style. This is a personal favorite of mine. The front 3/4 utilizes the same outline as my Evil Twin, yet I’ve pulled in the width of the swallow tail via a couple of wavy wings (akin to my Frodo model) making the swallow tip width a little narrower than the Evil Twin but wider than the Frodo. This board is huge on speed and paddlebility, yet still quite versatile and progressive compared to other full figured fish concepts. The slightly pulled in swallow sharpens the radius of bottom and top turns while the twin or quad fin set-up allows for a more modern approach (more release, slide, airs, etc) to your shred factor yet still maintaining the ability to draw some of the longest lines that a classic fish outline does best with all the extra speed you’ll have to burn.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0436/9222/8774/files/EricChristenson_5_8_FantomOfTheAguaSurfboard1.webp?v=1774373787
simon-jones-designs-7-0-fiji-triple-stringer-clear-surfboard-1
Simon Jones Designs | 7’0” Fiji Triple Stringer Clear Surfboard

The Fiji is a versatile and all-round great board for the quiver. In the days leading up to his departure date, the swell map kept growing. The report went from a mellow 4-6ft Cloudbreak to 8-10 ft 17-second period ground swell. Sitting in the rafters of the factory was a solid Burford triple stringer blank with this swell written all over it. And thus, the Fiji was born. You can see the board on its inaugural trip to Cloudbreak in Torren Martyn's 'Sea Legs'.

Although being built to be surfed in waves of consequence and power, the Fiji will still perform well in smaller surf.
